Cannot remove the last admin from a team

Asked by Samuel AdeyemiJun 18, 2026
One of our team admins left the company. I am trying to remove him from the engineering team but I get an error saying the last admin cannot be removed. He is the only admin left on that team. How do I clean this up?

Hello Samuel, a team must always keep at least one admin, so the removal is blocked until there is a second one. The fix is to promote someone first: 1. Open the team's member list. 2. Pick the person who should own the team going forward and change their role to admin. 3. Now remove the departing admin. With two admins present the check passes. The same rule applies to demotion, so you cannot demote the last admin to member either, the order is always promote first, then change the other person. If nobody on that team should be an admin, note that organization owners and admins can manage any team in the organization regardless of team membership. So you could add an organization admin to the team as its admin, or simply delete the team if it is no longer needed. One related thing while you are offboarding: removing the person from the organization also detaches them from every team in that organization automatically, so you do not need to clean up each team by hand. But the same last-admin protection applies, so promote a replacement on each team first.
